A Thai national was among 13 people injured in a deadly explosion outside a Kuala Lumpur pub that police say may be gang-related.
A member of a Malaysian bomb squad unit investigates the scene where a grenade exploded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Oct 9. One man was killed and at least 13 other were injured, including a Thai tourist, in a grenade explosion in front of an entertainment centre in Kuala Lumpur, a police official said. The attack occurred before dawn in Jalan Bukit Bintang, a road lined with bars and other entertainment spots, said Khairi Ahrasa, Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief. (EPA photo)
The Thai man, about 50 years old, was visiting Malaysia from Chiang Mai province when a hand grenade exploded under a car in the Bukit Bintang shopping district at about 4:30am today. One person also was killed in the blast.
Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said the injury was reported to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The unidentified Thai tourist was treated at a local hospital and Thai embassy officials planned to visit him, the spokesman said.
Khairi Ahrasa, deputy chief of the city’s Criminal Investigation Department, told Bloomberg News one victim died in the hospital. Police later detonated a second grenade that didn’t go off when thrown during the attack.
Police suspect gangs are behind the attack, the Star newspaper reported earlier, citing Khairi. The grenades weren’t made in Malaysia, the city’s CID chief Gan Kong Meng told reporters.
“We believe the motive is revenge and more than one person is involved in this,” Gan said. “The police will investigate all angles.”
